Companies have traditionally rented welding equipment to cover short-term needs: a machine breaks down, production suddenly increases or a project requires equipment or a welding process that is not normally available in-house.

Those situations remain common, but industrial customers are increasingly considering rental much earlier in their planning.

Project-based work, fluctuating order books and greater focus on capital efficiency are changing how companies think about equipment ownership. Instead of maintaining enough machinery for every possible production peak, businesses can increase or reduce capacity according to actual demand.

Annual maintenance shutdowns are a good example. A plant may need considerably more welding equipment for a limited period, while those same machines could remain underused for much of the year if purchased outright. Rental can also give companies an opportunity to test unfamiliar equipment or welding processes before making a longer-term investment.

Fast access to replacement equipment can prevent a machine failure from developing into a costly production delay. Rental can bridge the gap while existing equipment is repaired, support temporary production increases or provide capacity while longer procurement processes are underway.

Decades of Kemppi machines in the rental fleet

Kemppi welding machines have been part of Ramirent’s offering for decades, with some of the oldest machines in the fleet reaching approximately 25 to 30 years of age.

That longevity is particularly significant in rental. Equipment is transported repeatedly between customers and worksites and used by operators with different levels of experience.

As the fleet has evolved, Ramirent has introduced newer Kemppi Master and Minarc models. Before adding them to the rental offering, the machines were evaluated for qualities that matter in everyday rental use, including ease of setup, welding performance and durability.

A rental machine needs to be intuitive. Customers do not want to spend valuable working time navigating complicated settings or troubleshooting unfamiliar equipment.

The expectation is simple: collect the machine, set it up and start welding.

Portability is equally important. A machine may travel between industrial plants, temporary workshops, construction sites and confined working areas. Compact and lightweight equipment is easier to transport, store and position where the work actually takes place.

Ramirent sees these characteristics particularly in Kemppi’s Minarc machines. Their compact design makes them easy to handle while providing the performance required for professional work. Compatibility with widely available single-phase power and generators also makes them practical across workshops and changing site conditions. Ramirent supplies the equipment with the necessary torches, remote control, hoses and pressure gauge, helping customers begin work with minimal preparation.

Durability completes the equation. Frequent transportation and repeated handling place considerable demands on rental equipment. Reliable construction and straightforward maintenance help reduce downtime and keep machines in productive use throughout a long rental lifecycle.

“The best rental machines almost disappear into the work,” Laiho says.

Customers expect more than equipment

Industrial rental customers today also expect more from the overall service.

Online booking, account management, rental histories and digital access to manuals and documentation are increasingly part of the experience. At handover, equipment should be clean, validated, complete and ready for immediate use.

Customers also expect knowledgeable support when they need it.

Rental is likely to become increasingly integrated into industrial planning as manufacturers look for greater flexibility in how they manage equipment and production capacity.

Instead of sourcing individual machines only when an urgent need arises, companies and rental partners can plan around upcoming projects, production peaks and maintenance shutdowns. Digital information on equipment utilisation and maintenance could make that planning even more precise in the future.

Rental can also give smaller contractors and fabrication businesses access to the same professional-grade welding technology used by larger industrial operators without requiring the same upfront investment.
